Hirotaka Yamada joined Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in 2007. In 2015, he was transferred to Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a director for International Cooperation at the Science and Technology Bureau. He returned to JST in 2018, where he has been working as a manager at the Office of STI for SDGs. He holds a MSc in Science and Technology Policy from the University of Sussex.
